Why APIs Need Scrubbing at the Edge, Not the Server

A REST or GraphQL API is a much narrower attack surface than a full website, which makes it an efficient DDoS target — a few endpoints handle authentication, data reads and writes for every client you serve. If an attacker can flood even one of those endpoints, your entire integration layer can back up, timing out mobile apps, partner integrations and internal services all at once.

Scrubbing traffic at your application server means the attack has already succeeded in one sense: your VPS is spending CPU cycles and bandwidth parsing and rejecting malicious requests, capacity that should be serving real clients. Edge scrubbing moves that filtering upstream, to the network edge, so attack traffic is identified and dropped before it consumes any of your server's resources at all.

This is particularly important for Layer 7 attacks, which mimic legitimate HTTP or GraphQL requests and are harder to distinguish from real traffic using simple rate limits alone.
